Hi, I'm Yuki from Japan. I was born in Kyoto, raised in Osaka, and somehow ended up living in Denmark.

These days, I'm trying out a few things:

Here, I look back at a few turning points that led me to where I am now.

これまでSo far

2002 —

My older brother and I began supporting our mother, whose poor health kept her from working.

What happens isn't up to me. How I respond is.

I burned out after my high school entrance exams, lost interest in pretty much everything, and spent my days drifting. Then, just before my final year of high school, something hit without warning: my father's debt tore our family apart.

"There's no point just complaining about how unfair things are. I'll just have to do what I can."

That's when I started seeing things that way.

There were no adults around I could turn to, and I figured I'd need a university degree to get a good job. So I spent a year studying at home for the entrance exams while working part-time, and went to university on a scholarship. I'd become curious about the Nordic countries, often called the happiest in the world, so I majored in Danish and spent time studying in Denmark while I was at university.

Studying in Denmark. It was my first time abroad, and the language and cultural differences were a real challenge.

If it's useless, why teach it?

I was working hard to pay my tuition and studying so much it wore me down, body and mind. Then one of my professors told me, "No matter how hard you work at Danish, you'll never use it."

It was true that Danish wouldn't help much with job hunting. Maybe he meant it kindly, but it stung at the time, and I kept thinking: how can he be fine getting paid to teach something he thinks is useless?

Why three years?"

While job hunting, I went to an information session at a large company and asked, "Would I be able to work in English?" The answer was, "First, you'd spend three years training here in Japan." When I asked why it had to be three years, all I got back was, "Why is that a problem?"

In the end, I never heard a reason that made sense to me. That experience is what led me to join a small import-export company, where I thought I'd be given real responsibility right away. I did interpreting, translation, product sourcing and sales, but I often disagreed with the owner's way of doing things. After about a year, I quit, without even having another job lined up.

2012デンマークの雑貨屋Tiger(現フライングタイガーコペンハーゲン)初来日。 Tiger (now Flying Tiger Copenhagen), the Danish variety store, arrives in Japan for the first time. I interviewed the CEO in Danish for Hyggelig News, a media site we were running at the time.

If it doesn't exist, why not make it?

After quitting my first job on impulse, I thought, "Well, why not try doing it myself?" and became self-employed.

Some of the work I started when I became self-employed in 2009 continued as an organization called Hyggelig Japan, which became a registered non-profit in 2013.

I started it with two things in mind: if there was nowhere to use what I'd worked so hard to learn at university, I'd make one myself; and I wanted time and a place to pursue what I really cared about outside of work.

Thankfully, people joined. At its peak we had more than 15 members from many different countries. We wrote articles about Nordic culture and held cross-cultural events. I also set up projects where members could try something they wanted to do outside their jobs.

Is studying in Denmark really what this person needs?

Through my business, I also advised people who wanted to study in Denmark. Listening to them, I sometimes felt another country might suit them better. But Denmark was the only country I knew well enough to help with.

This got me interested in study-abroad agencies offering a wider range of options, and in 2011 I applied for a study-abroad counselor position at ECC International Study Abroad Division. I'd been learning web marketing on my own and putting it into practice in my own business, so during the interview, I suggested some improvements to their website. As it turned out, a while after joining, I was put in charge of their marketing as a whole.

2013 —

I came across Agile, a way of thinking that lets people work as people, not as cogs in a machine.

Moving to Tokyo, then Denmark

Marin Software, an international software company, reached out after seeing the experience and certifications on my LinkedIn profile. It meant moving from Osaka to Tokyo, and I had plenty of worries, including whether my English and my knowledge of digital advertising would hold up. But I wanted to try a new environment, so I decided to go for it.

My main job was supposed to be creating English e-learning content, but the Japanese localization was so poor that I persuaded my manager it needed fixing. Once again, I found myself doing work outside the role I'd been hired for. There were plenty of surprises and lessons, but what stayed with me most was discovering Agile as a way of thinking.

If it's supposed to be "right," why doesn't it catch on?

From 2015, while doing a master's at the IT University of Copenhagen, I worked as a project support member in the IT department of Maersk Line, one of the world's largest container shipping companies. There, I was also involved in helping introduce Agile.

An organization can announce that it's "going Agile," but actually spreading it across the organization is really hard. I researched this and wrote my master's thesis on it. Many times, I felt that what I'd studied was playing out right in front of me. But knowing something and handling it well are two completely different things. I still feel that today.

I wanted to work in Agile development, but…

After finishing my master's, I wanted to get involved in Agile development. But to work in Denmark as a foreigner, I also needed to make use of the experience I already had, and in the end I was hired by Siteimprove, a Danish software company, as a marketer for the Japanese market.

Marketing wasn't a career I aimed for from the start. I learned it because I needed it, put it into practice, and the opportunities people gave me added up. Before I knew it, I'd been doing it for a long time. I learned a lot along the way, and much of it I really enjoyed.

Looking back

Throughout my life, there are a few things I keep doing without really noticing.

  • When something makes me ask "why?", I keep looking until I find an answer I'm happy with.
  • If there's no "answer," I make my own.
  • I make time for the things that interest me.

My life hasn't always gone the way I imagined. Plenty of things came together by chance, and plenty started simply because I went with the flow.

But once, even I lost sight of where I was heading.

What made me pause

2018 -

My mother passed away suddenly after an illness.

I can't keep going just for myself

Until then, I'd needed to cover living costs for my mother, who lived apart from me, so I just kept doing whatever I could, as hard as I could. However, once I no longer had that reason to support her, I lost the motivation to work at all.

Returning to games

One of my childhood dreams was to play games as much as I wanted once I grew up. My mother only let me play "until five o'clock," and sometimes I played in secret.

In junior high, club activities and other things became more interesting, and I naturally drifted away from games. By my final year of high school, things at home had changed dramatically, and even as an adult I thought I should always be learning something useful for work, and that playing games was a waste of time.

Some time after my mother passed away, I tried getting back into games, which I used to love. Some things had changed and some hadn't, but the biggest difference was that you could now connect with people online.

No wondering "what's the point of this?" Just a good time with friends. Discovering that kind of fun is what brought me back to games.

My past experience, and my return to games. Since the two came together, I've been trying out a few things.

What I'm trying now

Agile training and support

I provide training and coaching for organizations outside software development that want to bring Agile ways of thinking into their work.

Agile isn't something you pick up the moment you hear about it. That's why, in my training, I've always focused on workshops where people work things out for themselves rather than just listening. Now I'm exploring ways to bring games into that, so people can understand it while having fun.

Making games for learning and discovery

Since I started playing games again, I've become interested not just in playing them, but in games as a medium.

I'd always assumed I could never make a game on my own. But with AI agents, I can now turn an idea into an actual game.

Through games, I've connected with people and learned a lot from them. That's why I'm experimenting, hands-on, with whether games can create experiences that lead to learning and new insight.

Right now, I'm turning what I've learned as a life coach into games, along with small ones that make you ask, "What really matters to me?"

Path of Exile 2の配信Streaming Path of Exile 2

After I started coaching, I realized that while I was encouraging my clients to try new things, I wasn't doing that myself. So in October 2024, I started streaming games.

At first, the idea was to learn English by playing games in English. I tried it with Dragon Quest III, Final Fantasy XIV, Baldur's Gate 3 and a few others, but it didn't really work out.

Then I came across a game called Path of Exile 2.

I started playing it as English practice too, but the more I played, the more the depth of the game drew me in. I used information from players and guides overseas as a starting point. Working out my own answers within its complex systems was fun, and I began studying it like a puzzle.

Over time, the information I gathered and organized started to help other players, too.

Building a Japanese–English online community

Playing Monster Hunter: World with friends, I discovered how much fun it is to play online with people I'd never met. That led me to start Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) on a Japanese server. There, I played with the same group at the same time, for hours and sometimes weeks, all working toward a single goal.

"I'm a native Japanese speaker, and I'd like to use that to help others."

So I'm building a community, mainly on FFXIV's EU servers, where people from abroad who are learning Japanese can play together. Japanese or English, either is fine. Eventually, I'd like it to be a place to enjoy all kinds of games together, not just FFXIV.
