Here, I look back at a few turning points that led me to where I am now.

これまでSo far

2002 —

My older brother and I began supporting our mother, whose poor health kept her from working.

What happens isn't up to me. How I respond is.

I burned out after my high school entrance exams, lost interest in pretty much everything, and spent my days drifting. Then, just before my final year of high school, something hit without warning: my father's debt tore our family apart.

"Complaining about how hard things are won't change anything. So I'll just have to do what I can."

That's how I started to think around that time.

There were no adults around I could turn to, and I figured I'd need a university degree to get a good job. So I spent a year studying at home for the entrance exams while working part-time, and went to university on a scholarship. I'd become curious about the Nordic countries, often called the happiest in the world, so I majored in Danish and spent time studying in Denmark while I was at university.

Studying in Denmark. It was my first time abroad, and the language and cultural differences were a real challenge.

If it's useless, why teach it?

I was working hard to pay my tuition and studying so much it wore me down, body and mind. Then one of my professors told me, "No matter how hard you work at Danish, you'll never use it."

It was true that Danish wouldn't help much with job hunting. Maybe he meant it kindly, but it stung at the time, and I kept thinking: how can he be fine getting paid to teach something he thinks is useless?

Why three years?"

While job hunting, I went to an information session at a large company and asked, "Would I be able to work in English?" The answer was, "First, you'd spend three years training here in Japan." When I asked why it had to be three years, all I got back was, "Why is that a problem?"

In the end, I never heard a reason that made sense to me. That experience is what led me to join a small import-export company, where I thought I'd be given real responsibility right away. I did interpreting, translation, product sourcing and sales, but I often found myself at odds with the owner's way of doing things, and after about a year I quit, without even having another job lined up.

2012デンマークの雑貨屋Tiger(現フライングタイガーコペンハーゲン)初来日。 Tiger (now Flying Tiger Copenhagen), the Danish variety store, arrives in Japan for the first time. I interviewed the CEO in Danish for Hyggelig News, a media site I was running at the time.

If it doesn't exist, I'll try making it.

After quitting my first job on impulse, with nothing lined up, I thought, "Well, why not try doing it myself?" and started working as a sole trader.

Some of the work I started as a sole trader in 2009 continued as an organization called Hyggelig Japan, which became a registered non-profit in 2013.

I started it with two thoughts in mind: "If there's nowhere to use what I worked so hard to learn at university, I'll make one," and "Outside of the work I did to make a living, I wanted time to pursue the things I actually wanted to do and people to do them with." And, thankfully, people joined us.

At its peak we had more than 15 members from many different countries. We wrote articles about Nordic culture and held cross-cultural events. I also set up projects where members could try something they wanted to do outside their jobs.

Is studying in Denmark really what this person needs?

Through my business, I also advised people who wanted to study in Denmark. Listening to them, I sometimes felt another country might suit them better. But Denmark was the only place I could support.

That got me interested in study-abroad agencies that could offer a wider range of options, and in 2011 I applied to ECC International as a study-abroad counselor. I'd been learning web marketing on my own and putting it into practice in my own business, so during the interview, I suggested some improvements to their website. As it turned out, a while after joining, I was put in charge of their marketing as a whole.

2013 —

I came across Agile, a way of thinking that helps when you can't predict what will happen next.

Moving to Tokyo, then Denmark

Marin Software, an international software company, reached out after seeing the experience and certifications on my LinkedIn profile. It meant moving from Osaka to Tokyo, and I wasn't sure whether my experience would be enough, but I wanted to try a new environment, so I decided to go for it.

My main job was supposed to be creating English e-learning content, but the Japanese localization was so poor that I persuaded my manager it needed fixing. Once again, I found myself doing work outside the role I'd been hired for. There were plenty of surprises and lessons, but what stayed with me most was discovering Agile as a way of working.

If it's supposed to be "right," why doesn't it catch on?

From 2015, while doing a master's at the IT University of Copenhagen, I worked in Maersk Line's IT department as a project support member and was involved in helping introduce Agile.

You can make a logical case for Agile, and an organization can announce that it's "going Agile," but actually putting it into practice across an organization is really hard. I researched this and wrote my master's thesis on it. Often it felt as if what I was studying was playing out right in front of me. But understanding something and dealing with it well turned out to be two different things.

I wanted to work in Agile development, but…

After finishing my master's, I wanted to get involved in Agile development. But as a foreigner looking for work in Denmark, I needed to build on the experience I already had, and I was hired by Siteimprove, a Danish software company, as a marketer for the Japanese market.

Marketing wasn't a career I aimed for from the start. I learned it because I needed it, put it into practice, and the opportunities people gave me added up. Before I knew it, I'd been doing it for a long time. I learned a lot along the way, and much of it I really enjoyed.

Looking back

Looking back, there are a few things I've done again and again without really noticing.

  • When something makes me ask "why?", I keep looking until I find an answer that makes sense to me.
  • If there's no "answer," I make my own.
  • I make time for the things that interest me.

My life hasn't always gone the way I imagined. Plenty of things came together by chance, and plenty started simply because I went with the flow.

But there was a time when I no longer knew where I was heading.

What made me pause

2018 -

My mother passed away suddenly after an illness.

I can't keep going just for myself

Until then, I'd needed to cover living costs for my mother, who lived apart from me, so I just kept doing whatever I could, as hard as I could. However, once I no longer had that reason to support her, I lost the motivation to work at all.

Returning to games

One of my childhood dreams was to play games as much as I wanted once I grew up. My mother only let me play "until five o'clock," and sometimes I played in secret.

In junior high, club activities and other things became more interesting, and I naturally drifted away from games. By my final year of high school, things at home had changed dramatically, and even as an adult I thought I should always be learning something useful for work, and that playing games was a waste of time.

Some time after my mother passed away, I started playing the games I used to love again. Some things had changed and some hadn't, but the biggest difference was that you could now connect with people online.

No wondering "what's the point of this?" Just a good time with friends. Discovering that kind of fun is what brought me back to games.

What I'm trying now

Path of Exile 2の配信Streaming Path of Exile 2

I started coaching around 2021, and while I was encouraging my clients to try new things, I felt I wasn't doing that myself. So in October 2024, I started streaming games.

At first, the idea was to learn English by playing games in English. I tried it with Dragon Quest III, Final Fantasy XIV, Baldur's Gate 3 and a few others, but it didn't really work out.

Then I came across a game called Path of Exile 2.

I started playing it as English practice too, but the more I played, the more the depth of the game drew me in. Using information from overseas players and guides as a starting point, I enjoyed working out my own ideas within its complex systems, and began studying it the way you'd work on a puzzle. Over time, the information I gathered and organized started to help other players, too.

Building a Japanese–English community

Playing Monster Hunter: World with friends, I discovered how much fun it is to play online with people I'd never met. That led me to start Final Fantasy XIV on a Japanese server, where I got to experience playing with the same group, at the same time, for hours and sometimes weeks, all working toward a single goal.

I'm trying to build a community around FFXIV's EU servers where people can play together using both Japanese and English, especially those from abroad who are learning Japanese. Going forward, I'd like it to become a place where we can play different games together, not just FFXIV.

Making games for learning and discovery

The longer I streamed, the more interested I became in games as a medium.

I'd always assumed making games wasn't something I could do. But with AI agents, I can now turn an idea into an actual game.

Games are how I've connected with people and learned things myself. So I'm actually making games and experimenting with whether they can create experiences that lead to learning and new realizations.

Agile training and support

I also work on Agile training and support.

In corporate training, people can easily end up feeling they're only there because they have to be, and I've found it hard to get them interested in the ideas behind Agile. So I'm experimenting with whether games could help people engage with these ideas more naturally.
